la canción que recordaba de paul robeson. cuando la oí chiquilla me causó tal impresión que, hace unos años, cuando la busqué en internet, lo reconocí de inmediato. me estremeció igual. todavía no sabía quién era.

jerome kern y óscar hammerstein compusieron show boat con paul robeson en mente para el papel de joe, el hombre que canta ol'man river. en 1928 paul robeson interpretó a joe en londres y grabó por primera vez la canción. aquí está cantada aún como parte de la opereta. con el tiempo, paul robeson empezó a variar algunos versos. los pequeños cambios, aunados a su voz extraordinaria, la convirtieron en oda a la dignidad humana.

entre los cambios estaba, por ejemplo: you show a little grit and you lands in jail en vez de: you get a little drunk. aquí canta que le gustaría ser como el río, en las versiones posteriores dice, por supuesto, que no.
